Background & context

The infantry division remained the backbone of the Wehrmacht until 1945: for all the tank legends, the bulk of the troops marched on foot and had their guns drawn by horses. The platoon was built around the MG 34 or MG 42: the riflemen with the Karabiner 98k brought up ammunition, and the firepower came from the machine gun. In Normandy in 1944 experienced Eastern Front veterans stood alongside newly raised formations of older age groups and men recruited from occupied territories.

On the tabletop

Officers, grenade throwers with stick grenades and riflemen in field grey: 48 unpainted figures represent German infantry of the Second World War in 1:76. Airfix designed the set to go with its Normandy range, where in 1944 seasoned Eastern Front veterans stood alongside newly raised divisions. On the gaming table they form the infantry facing British and American figures from the same series. In a diorama they man positions on the Atlantic Wall or the edge of a hedgerow.
