Product details

Background & context

In February 1941 the first German formations landed in Tripoli to prop up the beaten Italians, and under Rommel the blocking force became the German Afrika Korps. Tropical uniform, half-tracks and rapid flanking thrusts across open terrain shaped its style; Tobruk fell in June 1942, El Alamein held. After the defeat there and the retreat as far as Tunisia, the Axis forces surrendered in May 1943, and over 250,000 men went into captivity.

On the tabletop

This set supplies forty-eight unpainted soldiers of the German Afrika Korps in combat poses in 1:76, including a senior staff officer. Tropical uniform and sand tones dominate the painting. In the North African desert they faced Montgomery's 8th Army, which Airfix offers as a separate figure set in the same scale. On the gaming table the officer leads your desert force, and in a diorama he belongs at a command post behind the front.
