Background & context

Die Lysander sollte der Armee als fliegender Beobachter dienen und landete stattdessen in der Geschichte der Geheimdienste. Ihr hoher Knickflügel mit automatischen Vorflügeln erlaubte Landungen auf 300 Metern Wiese, und genau das brauchte die 161. Staffel ab 1941: Bei Vollmond flog sie Agenten der SOE über den Kanal, setzte sie auf Feldern ab und nahm andere mit zurück - mit einer festen Leiter am Rumpf für den schnellen Wechsel. Dass die Lysander 1940 in Frankreich gegen Bf 109 keine Chance hatte, ist die andere Hälfte: Von 175 Maschinen des Expeditionskorps gingen 118 verloren.

On the tabletop

The Lysander was designed as an observation and artillery spotting aircraft for the army, and short take-offs and landings were its strength. With 171 parts this 1:48 kit leaves you plenty of choices: canopy open or closed, slats extended or retracted, flaps lowered, wheels with or without spats, and optional bomb racks with a full load. The decals show a Mk.I from Old Sarum shortly before the war and a Mk.III of the Polish reconnaissance squadron at Renfrew in 1940.
