Background & context

Napoleonic field battles almost always followed the same basic patterns: infantry holds the line, artillery softens it up, cavalry punishes every mistake on the flank. Travel Battle does not depict any particular battle but exactly this interplay, with two nation-neutral armies of three brigades each. The gridded terrain takes over the role of the tape measure and makes movement and range unambiguous. The boards can be put together in different ways, so the same battlefield never comes up twice.

On the tabletop

Lay two terrain boards 10 inches square side by side, spread the six buildings over them, and the battlefield is set up on any kitchen table. Then you divide the figures into two evenly matched armies, each with infantry, cavalry, guns complete with crews and its brigadiers. You count off movement and range on the boards' inch grid; no tape measure is included and none is needed. With the rules booklet and the four dice a game stays manageable, and because the boards can be laid out in different ways, buildings and terrain will be somewhere else next time.
