    Product details

    Background & context

Photo-reconnaissance aircraft needed altitude, range and speed, not weapons, so the PR Spitfires flew without machine guns, with extra tanks in the wing leading edges and cameras in the fuselage. The PR.XIX was the last and fastest of them: a Rolls-Royce Griffon of more than 2,000 hp, a pressurised cabin on most aircraft, and an operating altitude of around 12,000 metres. 225 were built from 1944. The very last operational flight by an RAF Spitfire was made by a PR.XIX over Malaya on 1 April 1954, and until 1957 aircraft of this type took off daily for weather measurements. Sweden bought 50 as the S 31.

    On the tabletop

Instead of guns the PR.XIX carried cameras in the fuselage and extra fuel in the wings, while the Griffon engine and pressurised cockpit took it to great heights. From 44 parts this 1:72 kit reproduces the smooth, unarmed wings and long nose of this reconnaissance Spitfire. Two marking options are included. In your collection it stands for the photo reconnaissance aircraft that relied on height and speed rather than armament.
