    Product details

    Background & context

In June 1944 the RAF fighter squadrons were sitting on dusty forward airfields in Normandy, and beer was not on the supply list. The pilots found the solution themselves: breweries in southern England filled barrels, the ground crews hung them on the bomb racks or pumped the beer into cleaned drop tanks, and a Spitfire carried the load across the Channel.

    On the tabletop

In the summer of 1944 Spitfires carried beer barrels under their wings to the forward airfields in Normandy, hence the name Flying Dray. For this conversion the 1:24 kit includes barrels, bomb racks, nose cones and a slipper tank in resin. The marking of a Polish squadron in Normandy fits the story, while the other two show aircraft from Biggin Hill and from Malta. Without the barrels, the 448 plastic parts build a standard Mk.IXc for your display cabinet.
