    Product details

    Background & context

Reginald Mitchell had learned how to build speed with the Schneider Trophy racing aircraft and carried it over to a fighter: the prototype K5054 flew on 5 March 1936, and the elliptical wing became its trademark. Mitchell died in 1937 and did not live to see what became of it. The Mk.I with Merlin engine and eight Browning machine guns went to No. 19 Squadron at Duxford in August 1938, the squadron that Brian Lane led in 1940. In the Battle of Britain the Hurricane shot down more opponents, but the Spitfire became the symbol. More than 20,000 were built by 1948.

    On the tabletop

Brian Lane led No. 19 Squadron in 1940, and his Spitfire P9386 is the only marking option in this kit. The same squadron had been the first to receive the new Spitfire at Duxford back in 1938. With 36 parts in 1:72 and the easiest skill level, it is the first aircraft kit for many modellers. As 1:72 corresponds to 20 mm, you can also place the model alongside figures and vehicles of that size.
