Background & context

Die Mk.XVIII kam 1945 zu spät für den Krieg in Europa und ging fast komplett nach Fernost. Sie verband die Griffon-Zelle der Mk.XIV mit einem verstärkten Flügel, zusätzlichen Rumpftanks und Aufhängungen für Raketen und Bomben. Rund 300 Stück wurden gebaut, als Jäger und als Aufklärer FR.XVIII. Ihre Kampfeinsätze flog sie gegen kommunistische Guerillas im Malaiischen Notstand, wo die No. 60 Squadron im Januar 1951 den letzten Gefechtseinsatz einer RAF-Spitfire überhaupt flog. Auch Indien, Burma und Rhodesien nutzten den Typ.

On the tabletop

As the final stage of the Griffon Spitfire, the F Mk.XVIII arrived too late for the war in Europe and served mainly in the Far East afterwards. With 157 parts in 1:48 you build either the fighter or the FR.XVIII reconnaissance version with camera. The decals show an aircraft of No. 60 Squadron RAF at Kuala Lumpur and one of the Indian Air Force at Delhi, both from shortly after the war. With its five-bladed propeller and bubble canopy it completes a Spitfire line-up in your cabinet.
