Background & context

Die Admiral-Hipper-Klasse war für den Handelskrieg im Atlantik gedacht, bekam dafür aber eine Hochdruck-Dampfanlage, die viel Brennstoff fraß und ständig Ärger machte. Die Reichweite reichte kaum für lange Fahrten, weshalb die Kreuzer meist an kurzer Leine in Nord- und Ostsee blieben. Auf dem Papier waren sie schwer bewaffnet und gut geschützt, im Einsatz blieben sie hinter den Erwartungen zurück.

On the tabletop

Here you build two Admiral Hipper class heavy cruisers in 1:400, with base paints, a brush and polystyrene cement included. Because Prinz Eugen and Admiral Hipper belong to the same class, building them in parallel shows clearly where they differ in detail. The class was intended for commerce raiding in the Atlantic, but its high-pressure steam plant used so much fuel that the cruisers mostly stayed in the North Sea and the Baltic. Once painted, the two stand together as a small squadron in your cabinet.
