Background & context

Beide Schiffe entstanden Ende der Dreißigerjahre und umgingen die geltenden Rüstungsgrenzen schlicht dadurch, dass die Werften die Wasserverdrängung zu niedrig angaben - tatsächlich lagen über 50.000 Tonnen im Wasser. Der Panzergürtel war nach den Erfahrungen der Skagerrakschlacht ausgelegt, die Flugabwehr dagegen blieb schwach. Genau daran scheiterten am Ende beide: die Bismarck an einem Torpedotreffer im Ruder, die Tirpitz an Bomben aus großer Höhe.

On the tabletop

You build the two Bismarck class battleships in 1:400, and this edition already contains base paints, a brush and cement for polystyrene. The large hulls make a project for several evenings, at the end of which both ships stand side by side on display. They were built with a strong armour belt but weak anti-aircraft defences, and that is what sank them: a torpedo jammed the Bismarck's rudder, and the Tirpitz was hit by bombs dropped from high altitude.
