For many the Spitfire is the very first kit of all, here as an LF Mk XVI in 1:72 with paints, brush and glue in the box. Decals for an RAF aircraft of 1945 are included, and you need nothing more to get started.

Background & context

Reginald Mitchell designed the Spitfire in the mid-1930s as an elegant interceptor with an elliptical wing, a shape that worked aerodynamically and incidentally gave it the most famous profile in aviation history. In the summer of 1940 it stood alongside the Hurricane in the Battle of Britain and became the symbol of British resistance. By 1948 over 20,000 aircraft had been built in more than twenty marks, from the early Merlin fighter to the heavy late Griffon types.

On the tabletop

The Spitfire LF Mk XVI came about when Merlin engines for the Spitfire were also built in the USA. This version is recognisable by its clipped wing tips, bubble canopy and slender fin. The starter box for the 1:72 model contains acrylic paints, brush, glue and a decal sheet with one RAF marking from 1945. With it you paint your model as a fighter of the last months of the war and put it on the shelf.
