Product details

Background & context

Technically, the S35 was ahead of its time: hull and turret consisted of a few large castings instead of riveted plates, which made it sturdy and at the same time relatively light. In 1940 its 47 mm gun could penetrate almost every German tank. Its weak point was the one-man turret, as the commander had to load, aim, fire and lead his unit all at once. That is what defeated it in combat, not its armour or firepower.

On the tabletop

The starter set for the Somua S35 holds 40 parts in 1:72 scale plus acrylic paints, brush and glue, and the build can be done in an afternoon. The original was made of a few large castings instead of riveted plates, and its 47 mm gun was a match for most German tanks of 1940. Its weakness was the one-man turret, in which the commander had to load, aim, fire and lead at the same time. For your first tank kit it is a manageable project.
