    Background & context

The Mustang owed its range to a Rolls-Royce Merlin that the Americans built under licence. Only this engine turned a mediocre fighter into the escort that held out all the way to Berlin. On the other side stood the Fw 190, a radial-engined design by Kurt Tank, deliberately laid out to be robust and low-maintenance so that even field workshops could keep it in order. Over France in 1944 the two design philosophies met in the same airspace.

    On the tabletop

This starter version adds acrylic main colours, a brush and polystyrene cement to the 1:72 kits of the P-51D Mustang and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. That lets you finish both fighters without any painting kit of your own. The decals cover both aircraft. The pair shows two design approaches: the Mustang with its licence-built Merlin inline engine, and the Fw 190 as Kurt Tank's sturdy radial-engined design that field workshops could keep running. The two met over France in 1944.
