    Background & context

    Klipper wie die Flying Cloud entstanden aus einem simplen Rechenexempel: Wer um 1850 Waren und Passagiere um Kap Hoorn nach Kalifornien brachte, wurde für Tempo bezahlt, nicht für Ladevolumen. Also baute Donald McKay in East Boston Rümpfe, die schmal und scharf geschnitten waren und unter einer gewaltigen Segelfläche standen. Die Flying Cloud lief 1851 vom Stapel und wurde zum Aushängeschild dieser kurzen Blütezeit. Mit Dampfschiffen und der Eisenbahn quer durch die Staaten war die Ära zwanzig Jahre später vorbei.

    On the tabletop

    With this Starter Kit you build the clipper Flying Cloud in 1:200 scale, a good 40 cm long when finished. Glue, brush and the main paints are included, so you need nothing extra. Clippers like this carried goods and passengers around Cape Horn to California around 1850, and the slim hull and tall rig show how they were built for speed. With 126 parts the kit suits your first sailing ship.
