Description

A Sherman with the long barrel, in 31 parts and with one-piece tracks instead of individual links. Three acrylic paints, glue and a brush are in the box, and the finished model is eleven centimetres long. A tank as an after-work project.

Background & context

The Firefly was a stopgap that became the best British tank of 1944. Because Britain's own cruiser tanks could not carry the heavy 17-pounder gun, British engineers turned the gun on its side, built the wireless into a box behind the turret and so squeezed it into an American Sherman. At first there was one Firefly to three ordinary Shermans per troop, and the German gunners quickly learned to fire at the long barrel first. By the end of the war over 2,000 vehicles had been converted.

On the tabletop

This small starter set holds the 31 parts of the Sherman Firefly along with three water-based acrylic paints, glue and a brush. The tracks are heavily simplified and come in one piece, so the build works out even on your very first model. In 1:72 you get the British Sherman with the long 17-pounder gun that faced Tigers and Panthers in Normandy in 1944. Once built, it can go into a display cabinet or join figures in the same scale.
