    Product details

    Background & context

At the start of 1944 the British had a problem: their 17-pounder could defeat Tiger and Panther but fitted into none of their own tank turrets. The solution was a conversion of the Sherman, with the gun installed rotated through 90 degrees, the wireless set moved into a box on the back of the turret and the hull gunner deleted to make room for ammunition. Around 2,000 Fireflies were produced in this way. The best-known kill attributed to a Firefly is the Tiger of Michael Wittmann on 8 August 1944 near Saint-Aignan-de-Cramesnil, from the ranks of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry.

    On the tabletop

The Firefly Vc combined the American Sherman with the British 17-pounder gun, giving it the power to take on Tigers and Panthers. This 1:72 kit has 88 parts, and the decals cover a Staffordshire Yeomanry vehicle during Operation Goodwood and one of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, both Normandy 1944. British crews painted the front of the barrel in a light colour so the tank looked like an ordinary Sherman. On the gaming table it joins your British Shermans in 1:72.
