    Product details

    Background & context

There really was a Sheriff of Nottingham: the office of the "shire reeve" administered taxes, justice and forest law for the king in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Because Sherwood Forest was a royal forest, the Sheriff had to pursue every poacher and outlaw, and that is exactly what the ballads turned into Robin Hood's arch-enemy. Historical office-holders such as Philip Marc under King John really were notorious as extortioners; Magna Carta of 1215 expressly demanded his removal. So the villain of the legend has a real core.

    On the tabletop

Eighteen armed men on foot and six riders with their horses give you the Sheriff of Nottingham's force in 1:76. The office really existed, and its holder collected taxes in the king's name and pursued poachers in the royal forest of Sherwood. Metal armour and strong heraldic colours suit the painting. In a diorama the men guard a castle or a tax convoy, and on the gaming table they hunt Robin Hood's outlaws from the companion set.
