Product details

Background & context

The fyrd was not a professional army but a levy: free men of a shire who turned out with their own equipment when the land had to be defended. It looked correspondingly mixed - spear and round shield for most, plus axes, knives and whatever the farmstead could provide. Only the nobility brought mail shirts and swords. On the gaming table, this mixture is exactly what makes such units appealing.

On the tabletop

This frame provides heads and equipment for eight Saxon warriors; bodies are not included. With twelve heads, swords, axes, spears, bows, round and kite shields, a dragon-head standard and a horn, you arm figures for Hail Caesar exactly as you like. That suits the fyrd, the levy of free men who turned out with their own, correspondingly mixed equipment. The standard and horn go to your command figures.
