    Product details

    Background & context

Geoffrey de Havilland designed the B.E.2 at Farnborough in 1912, and the c variant of 1914 was deliberately laid out for inherent stability. That made it ideal for artillery observation and photographic reconnaissance: the aircraft flew straight and level while the crew worked. Against the Fokker E.I of Max Immelmann and Oswald Boelcke, with its synchronised machine gun, exactly that became a death sentence, as the observer sat in front between wings and rigging and could hardly fire. At home, by contrast, the type proved itself as a night fighter: in September 1916 William Leefe Robinson shot down the airship SL 11 over London in a B.E.2c.

    On the tabletop

The B.E.2c was designed for steady straight flight so that its crew could observe artillery fire and take photographs. Against the Fokker monoplanes of 1915 and 1916 that stability became a weakness, yet over England it proved itself as a night fighter against airships. This 1:72 biplane has 54 parts and two marking options, and its struts and rigging let you practise building two-deckers. At 20 mm scale it can also join a First World War gaming table as an observation aircraft.
