    Background & context

In AD 43 four legions under Aulus Plautius crossed to Britain, and around forty years later Agricola stood with his troops in Scotland. The legion was less a band of heroes than a machine: shield wall, volley of pila, then the short gladius at close quarters, all at the centurion's command. The Romans themselves, however, did not drive chariots into battle; those belonged to the Britons, as Caesar had noted with astonishment back in 55 BC. In the circus and in triumphal processions, on the other hand, the chariot was a Roman status symbol.

    On the tabletop

A centurion, a standard bearer and legionaries in battle poses form the core of this set, joined by a chariot with its team of horses and driver, 55 parts in 1:76 in all. The Romans rarely drove chariots into battle, but they were part of triumphal processions and the circus. In a diorama you can therefore put the chariot at the head of a procession with the legionaries following in line. On the gaming table the figures fight Airfix's Ancient Britons in the same scale.
