Product details

Background & context

On the battlefield, the shield showed who you were facing: legionaries carried the rectangular, curved scutum, while the auxilia mostly carried a flat oval shield that offered less protection but allowed freedom of movement. They were painted by unit, with thunderbolts, wreaths and crescent moons on a coloured field. Anyone putting legionaries and auxiliaries on the same gaming table therefore shows the difference through the shield rather than the armour.

On the tabletop

These 20 oval metal shields are meant for the auxiliaries of your Roman army in Hail Caesar. Use them for conversions, to replace bent plastic shields or to give a mixed unit the right shape. Next to legionaries with the curved scutum, the auxilia are then recognisable at once by their flat oval shields. The shields were painted by unit, with thunderbolts, wreaths or crescents on a coloured ground, for example.
