Product details

Background & context

In the summer of 1940 the outcome of the Battle of Britain did not hang on the pilots alone. On the stations from Biggin Hill to Duxford, riggers, fitters and armourers made sure that a Spitfire that had just landed was refuelled, rearmed and ready to take off again within a few minutes. The RAF ground crews numbered far more heads than the flying crews, and without them the famous sorties of the Few would not have been possible.

On the tabletop

Armourers with ammunition, men handling machine guns and others operating the cameras used to assess air combat: 48 unpainted figures show RAF ground crew in 1:76. In the summer of 1940 teams like these had a landed Spitfire or Hurricane ready to fly again within minutes. Group them around a fighter on a grass airfield in a diorama, add a fuel bowser and ammunition boxes, and the short break between two sorties comes to life.
