Product details

Background & context

When it became clear in 1944 that the Sherman's 75 mm gun achieved hardly anything against Panther and Tiger, the British simply fitted their 17-pounder anti-tank gun into the turret. To make it fit, the gun lay in its cradle rotated by 90 degrees, the radio moved into a box on the turret rear, and the bow machine-gunner had to give up his place for the longer ammunition. Around 2,000 vehicles were produced this way. Usually only one went with each troop, which is why German crews learned to fire first at the Sherman with the long barrel.

On the tabletop

The Quickbuild Firefly is pushed together from 154 pre-coloured bricks, so you need neither glue nor paint. The 1:35 model has a turning turret, rolling road wheels and tracks made of linked segments. Even in this form, the long barrel of the 17-pounder gun makes the British Sherman variant instantly recognisable. The markings come as stickers, and the finished model handles play just as well as a spot on a bedroom shelf.
