Product details

Background & context

The black and white bands were a stopgap. After the losses to friendly anti-aircraft fire over Sicily, the invasion command wanted to rule out Allied aircraft being brought down over Normandy by their own ships. During the night before 6 June 1944, ground crews hurriedly painted the stripes onto thousands of aircraft. Spitfires flew fighter cover overhead and kept the Luftwaffe away from the landing beaches.

On the tabletop

This Spitfire wears the invasion stripes that were meant to identify Allied aircraft over Normandy in June 1944. It is built without glue or paint: the 34 pre-coloured parts push together, a stand is included and the propeller turns. Over the landing beaches, Spitfires flew fighter cover against the Luftwaffe. For children the model is an easy way into the history of D-Day, and once built it stands on its stand on the shelf.
