Background & context

The Panzer IV was originally conceived as a support tank that would engage bunkers and gun positions with its short 7.5cm howitzer while the Panzer III dealt with the tanks. The T-34 changed that. From the spring of 1942 the F version was given the long 7.5cm KwK 40 and became the F2, the first German tank able to penetrate the Soviet newcomer at range. In North Africa the British respectfully called it the Mark IV Special. Out of this upgunning the Panzer IV grew into the backbone of the panzer divisions until 1945.

On the tabletop

During assembly you decide whether your Panzer IV gets the short gun of the F1 or the long barrel of the F2. The long gun turned the former support vehicle into a tank that could engage the T-34 at range from 1942 onwards. The 101 parts in 1:76 come from moulds made in 1971, and the decals cover one vehicle of the Afrika Korps and one in Europe. That way the model suits a desert scene as well as a gaming table with European terrain and figures in the same scale.
