Product details

Background & context

The T-34 forced the Wehrmacht to rethink in 1941: the result was the Panther with sloped armour, wide tracks and the long 7.5 cm KwK 42, which penetrated any Allied tank at 2,000 metres. Its debut at Kursk in July 1943 was ruined by engine fires and gearbox failures, yet the Ausf. A and G from 1944 were regarded by many as the best medium tank of the war. Around 6,000 were built, too few against the mass of Shermans and T-34s.

On the tabletop

Designed as an answer to the Soviet T-34, the Panther reached the front in spring 1943 and saw its first major action at Kursk. Airfix supplies it in 1:76 with 97 parts from moulds dating back to 1961, and the decal sheet covers one set of markings. At just under eight centimetres long the model fits a small Eastern Front scene or a collection of classic Airfix kits. For games with 1:76 figures it gives you a German medium tank.
