Product details

Background & context

The P-51 was created not for the US Army but to a British order: in 1940 North American presented a prototype in a good four months. With the original Allison engine the aircraft remained sluggish at high altitude, and only the fitting of the Rolls-Royce Merlin made it a high-altitude fighter. From 1944 the D version escorted the American bomber formations all the way to Berlin and so took from the Luftwaffe its last safe space.

On the tabletop

The P-51D Mustang is built from 51 parts in 1:72, with clear parts for the canopy. The marking shows an aircraft of an American fighter group flying from Honington in England in 1944. From airfields like this, Mustangs escorted the bomber formations deep into Germany, so your model stands for the escort fighters of the final war years. As a display model it suits other fighters of the period, and in a diorama an airfield in England.
