Product details

Background & context

When the P-51D appeared in Europe in 1944, the sums changed for the Luftwaffe: a fighter with the range of a bomber, and fast, agile and armed with six heavy machine guns as well. In the spring of 1944 the Mustang groups of the 8th Air Force went hunting freely instead of sticking close to the bomber formations, and wore down the German fighter arm over its own airfields. After the war the Mustang still flew in Korea as the F-51, and today it fills the start lines at the Reno Air Races.

On the tabletop

From 1944 the P-51D escorted the bombers of the US Eighth Air Force deep into Germany. This 1:72 kit has 53 parts and a 157 mm wingspan; paints and glue are bought separately. The decals belong to the aircraft of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph L. Thury, which flew from Fowlmere in England. As 1:72 corresponds to 20 mm, the model can also serve as an escort fighter above a Second World War gaming table.
