Background & context

Die Kolonialverwaltung Natals hob 1879 mehrere Bataillone afrikanischer Hilfstruppen aus, oft aus Männern, die selbst vor den Zulus geflohen waren. Ausgerüstet wurden sie kaum: nur ein Bruchteil bekam ein Gewehr, der Rest zog mit Speer und Schild ins Feld. Ein rotes Stirnband sollte sie im Getümmel von den Zulus unterscheiden, was im Pulverdampf von Isandlwana wenig half. Danach galt das NNC als unzuverlässig, obwohl es genauso schlecht geführt worden war wie der Rest der Kolonne.

On the tabletop

Four warriors of the Natal Native Contingent with spare heads, weapons and shields add to your British force for the Zulu War of 1879. These African auxiliaries were rarely issued a rifle; most fought with spear and shield, and a red headband was meant to tell them apart from the Zulus. In Black Powder you use them to guard the flanks of a British column. The spare parts give varied poses.
