Background & context

Die Infanterie de Ligne war keine Elite und sollte es nicht sein - sie war die Masse, mit der Napoleon rechnete. Ihre eigentliche Stärke lag im Marschtempo: Verbände, die früher ankamen als erwartet, entschieden Ulm 1805 und Jena 1806, bevor überhaupt gefeuert wurde. Auf dem Schlachtfeld ging sie meist in Kolonne vor, ein Kompromiss aus Feuerkraft und Wucht, den Wellington später systematisch bestrafte.

On the tabletop

Four French line infantrymen with a choice of heads sit on this 28 mm frame. They are exactly the few men a large battalion for Black Powder still lacks at the end. The Infanterie de Ligne was the mass of Napoleon's army, and its strength lay in its marching pace, as at Ulm in 1805 and Jena in 1806. On the table it usually advances in column; form line for volleys and square against cavalry.
