The Gustav in 1:72, built in an evening with its 41 parts. Airfix has designed the G-6 as a beginner's kit: few parts that fit clearly, yet with the characteristic bulges over the machine-gun fairings and decals for two Luftwaffe aircraft of 1943/44.

    Product details

    Background & context

The G-6 was the attempt to bring a fighter of 1935 up to the standard of 1943: heavier 13 mm machine guns in the fuselage, which brought the bulges that gave it its nickname, plus field conversion kits with cannon gondolas or rocket launchers for use against the four-engined bombers. More than 12,000 G-6s were built, more than of any other Bf 109 variant. In the process the aircraft became heavier and more sluggish, but thanks to its DB 605 it remained a dangerous opponent at altitude, especially in the hands of experienced squadron commanders.

    On the tabletop

The bulges ahead of the cockpit give the G-6 away; underneath them sat the feeds for the heavier fuselage machine guns. In 1:72 the 41-part kit goes together in a few hours. The decals cover two aircraft from airfields inside Germany: Major Hermann Graf's machine at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim in autumn 1943, and one from Bonn-Hangelar the following spring. In your cabinet it sits well next to a four-engined Allied bomber in the same scale.
