    Product details

    Background & context

When the Bf 109 first flew in May 1935, it combined everything that was only just emerging in fighters: all-metal construction, enclosed cockpit, retractable undercarriage, thin wing. In 1939 the E series brought the fuel-injected Daimler-Benz DB 601, and in the summer of 1940 the E-4 brought two 20 mm MG FF cannon in the wings, armoured glass and an armoured seat. Over England its limit became apparent: there was fuel for about ten minutes of combat over London, then the flight back across the Channel had to begin. JG 53, with the ace of spades on the fuselage, was one of the fighter wings that fought through that summer from the Channel coast.

    On the tabletop

With two cannon in the wings and an armoured seat, the E-4 flew against England from the Channel coast in the summer of 1940. This 1:72 kit has 64 parts and one set of markings: an aircraft of 7th Staffel, JG 53, based at Le Touquet in September 1940. With a modest parts count it suits your first attempts at Luftwaffe camouflage. As 1:72 matches the 20 mm gaming scale, the aircraft also fits alongside figures of that size.
