Product details

Background & context

The US Army wanted its infantry to keep up with the tanks and crossed the M3 Scout Car with a tracked running gear to achieve it. The result could carry twelve men along farm tracks, stayed open-topped and so was protected against neither artillery nor air attack; the crews called it the Purple Heart Box. Even so, the half-track became the workhorse of the armoured divisions and served as a tractor, radio vehicle, ambulance and carrier for anti-aircraft guns and mortars. Through Lend-Lease, thousands ended up with the British and the Soviets.

On the tabletop

The M3 carried the infantry of the American armored divisions forward and held a whole squad. The 1:76 kit consists of 54 parts for the half-track and the 1-ton trailer, with the M49 machine gun ring above the right front seat. In a diorama it can drive in a column with its trailer or drop off its infantry at the roadside. On the gaming table it moves your American 1:76 figures faster, but its open top gives them little protection against artillery.
