Background & context

Die Ju 52 begann 1930 als einmotoriger Frachter und wurde erst mit drei BMW-Sternmotoren zum Erfolg - als Verkehrsflugzeug der Lufthansa und Dutzender Airlines weltweit. Die Luftwaffe machte sie zum Arbeitstier: Fallschirmjäger sprangen aus ihr über Norwegen, Holland und Kreta, wo die Verluste so hoch waren, dass Deutschland nie wieder eine große Luftlandung wagte. Die g4e war die Standardausführung von 1939 mit verstärktem Fahrwerk. Die berühmte Wellblechhaut aus Duraluminium war robust, kostete aber Tempo - die Tante Ju flog kaum schneller als ein Lkw auf der Autobahn heute.

On the tabletop

The corrugated skin of the Ju 52 makes this 1:72 model easy to recognise, and its 218 parts build a transport with a 444 mm wingspan. The three markings come from Luftwaffe transport units between 1940 and 1942, two of them from Russia and one from Neumünster. During the war the Ju 52 carried troops, supplies, wounded and paratroopers and towed gliders. Next to your 20 mm figures you can place it on a field airstrip on the Eastern Front.
