Background & context

1916 änderte sich das Gesicht der deutschen Infanterie: Bei Verdun tauchte der Stahlhelm auf, die Pickelhaube verschwand nach und nach aus den Gräben. Wichtiger noch war der Wandel der Taktik. Statt in Wellen anzulaufen, arbeiteten sich kleine Stoßtrupps mit Handgranaten, leichten Maschinengewehren und ab 1918 der MP 18 durch die Grabensysteme. Diese Trupps trugen die Frühjahrsoffensive 1918 und blieben Vorbild für die Infanterie des nächsten Krieges.

On the tabletop

This box yields up to 30 German soldiers of the second half of the First World War. Pickelhaube and field cap show the earlier period, steel helmet and gas mask the storm troops of the final years. They move against enemy trenches in small groups with grenades, MP 18 and light machine gun instead of advancing in waves. Some bodies without ammunition pouches become officers, and ten loose grenades per sprue are ready for trench raids.
