Almost 45 centimetres of Schnellboot: with 290 parts, the E-Boat is the largest of the Airfix coastal craft and needs a good stretch of shelf. Skill Level 3, markings for boats S6 to S13 in the English Channel in 1940.

Background & context

Die Briten nannten sie E-Boats, für Enemy Boats; die Kriegsmarine sagte schlicht Schnellboot. Gebaut wurden sie fast alle bei Lürssen in Bremen-Vegesack, und der Unterschied zu den britischen Booten lag im Antrieb: Dieselmotoren statt Benzin, damit weniger Brandgefahr, mehr Reichweite und ein runder Rumpf, der auch bei schwerer See schnell blieb. Die Boote S6 bis S13 gehörten zur ersten Generation mit gut 33 Metern Länge. Ab Sommer 1940 operierten sie von den besetzten Kanalhäfen aus gegen britische Küstenkonvois.

On the tabletop

The marking shows a boat of the S6 to S13 series as it operated from the Channel ports against British coastal convoys in 1940. With 290 parts in 1:72 and skill level 3, the kit asks for patience with the torpedo tubes, weapons and deck structures. The model grows to almost 45 centimetres and needs a shelf of its own. In the same scale it pairs with British coastal craft such as the Vosper torpedo boat, in a diorama or on a gaming table for Channel actions.
