Background & context

When the Fw 190 appeared over the English Channel in autumn 1941, the Royal Air Force was abruptly at a disadvantage: it was faster than the Spitfire Mk V, better in the roll and had considerably heavier cannon armament. Only the Spitfire Mk IX brought the British back onto level terms a year later. Kurt Tank's design deliberately relied on an air-cooled radial engine and a wide-track undercarriage, robust and quick to service.

On the tabletop

This 1:72 kit builds into an Fw 190 A5, A8 or F8, and you make the choice before gluing. Each version has its own marking: the A5 flown by Erich Hondt from Husum in autumn 1943, the F8 of a ground-attack wing in Italy in May 1944, and an A8 from Bad Aibling in 1945. The model can thus show the fighter against bomber formations or the ground-attack version on the Italian front. In a diorama of the same scale it fits onto a forward airfield.
