    Product details

    Background & context

Grumman drew the lesson from its experience with the Wildcat and built the Hellcat around a 2,000 hp twin-row radial engine: heavily armoured, wide-tracked and designed for the rough life on board ship. From summer 1943 the F6F-5 was the most-built version, and besides its fixed guns it could also carry bombs and rockets. That turned the pure fighter into a multi-role aircraft that was still in service years after the war. The French Aéronavale flew its Hellcats right into the Indochina War.

    On the tabletop

The F6F-5 Hellcat kit builds into a 1:72 model 142 mm long. Four markings are provided: two aircraft of a US Navy squadron aboard USS Randolph in 1945, a Fleet Air Arm Hellcat from HMS Emperor off Ceylon, and one of the French Aéronavale in the Indochina War. As a display model it shows carrier fighters in the Pacific, in the Indian Ocean or in the Far East after the war. In a diorama it sits on a flight deck.
