Background & context

Kürassiere trugen als einzige Reiter der Epoche noch Brustpanzer, dazu kamen Dragoner in Grün und die Carabiniers mit weißen Röcken und Messinghelmen. Am Nachmittag des 18. Juni 1815 führte Ney diese Masse gegen die alliierten Höhen, ohne Infanterie und ohne Geschütze mitzunehmen. Die Briten formierten Karrees, die Reiter umritten sie stundenlang und kamen nicht hinein. Als die Pferde ausgelaugt waren, war Napoleons Reiterei verbraucht.

On the tabletop

Cuirassiers in breastplates, dragoons and carabiniers make up the 20 heavy cavalrymen for your French army in 13.5 mm Black Powder, plus a horse artillery 6-pounder. When painting, pick out the dragoons in green and the carabiniers in white coats and brass helmets. Heavy cavalry is meant for the decisive blow against shaken lines. As Ney's charges at Waterloo showed, it achieves little against intact squares without infantry and guns. Bases are not included.
