An aircraft model on its own remains a display piece. These 48 figures in 1:72 turn it into a forward airfield: fitters at the engine cowling, men with ammunition boxes at the wing, someone running across to the aircraft.

Product details

Background & context

Behind every hour in the air stood dozens of men on the ground: fitters who went over the engine between two sorties, armourers who fed belts into the wings, as well as bowser drivers, wireless operators and orderlies. On the forward airfields of the Eastern Front and North Africa this was done in the open, in dust or in mud, often with improvised tools. Without these men a Staffel came to a standstill within a few days, however good its aircraft were.

On the tabletop

With 48 Luftwaffe ground crew figures in 1:72 scale you can set up a field airstrip around your aircraft models. Mechanics work on the engine, men carry ammunition boxes to the wing, and others run across to the aircraft. That way your diorama shows the work between two sorties. With dust and sand you show an airfield in North Africa, with mud one on the Eastern Front, and a fighter or bomber in the same scale forms the centre.
