Background & context

Nach dem Ende der weströmischen Grenzverteidigung ritt Reiterei selten im geschlossenen Keil. Wer sich ein Pferd leisten konnte, führte sein Gefolge an, warf Speere aus dem Sattel und war wieder weg, bevor der Schildwall reagieren konnte. Goten, Franken und die frühen Normannen kämpften über Jahrhunderte so, ohne Kettenhemd und ohne eingelegte Lanze. Erst im 11. Jahrhundert wurde daraus die geschlossene Attacke, die bis heute das Bild vom Ritter prägt.

On the tabletop

Twelve unarmoured riders with spear or sword and shield lead a lord's retinue in the centuries after Rome. The heads turn them into Goths, Franks, Saxons, Late Romans, Britons, Normans or Vikings. On the table they throw spears from the saddle and pull back before the shield wall can react, or pursue fleeing enemies. Three charging mastiffs and plenty of spare shields are included.
