Background & context

Zwei Tage vor der Landung bekamen die Bodenmannschaften den Befehl, jedes alliierte Flugzeug mit fünf breiten Streifen in Schwarz und Weiß zu bemalen, damit die eigene Flak nicht auf die eigenen Maschinen schießt. Über 11.000 alliierte Flugzeuge standen am 6. Juni 1944 bereit, die Luftwaffe brachte an dem Tag kaum hundert in die Luft. Danach wurde es hart: Jagdgeschwader wie das JG 26 verlegten in die Normandie und lieferten den Mustangs, Spitfires und Tempests wochenlang Gefechte über den Hecken des Bocage. Die Tempest jagte parallel dazu die V1 über Südengland.

On the tabletop

This set lets you build five fighters that fought over Normandy in 1944, all in 1:72: the Spitfire Mk.IXc, P-51D Mustang and Hawker Tempest Mk.V on the Allied side, the Bf 109 G-6 and Fw 190 A-8 on the German side. With 72 parts the Tempest is the most involved kit, the 26-part Spitfire the quickest. The decal sheet includes the black and white invasion stripes the Allies painted on their aircraft for the landings so their own flak would recognise them. Paints, glue and brushes are supplied, so you can start on the first model straight away.
