Product details

Background & context

During 1944 the Luftwaffe introduced new camouflage colours for the upper surfaces of its aircraft, among them RLM 81 brown violet and RLM 82 light green. On many fighters they replaced the earlier greys RLM 74 and 75. Because paint came from numerous suppliers and raw materials were scarce, the shade varied from factory to factory between brown and olive. It can be seen on late Fw 190s, Bf 109s and Me 262s.

On the tabletop

For upper surface camouflage, spray RLM 81 straight from the bottle or thin it with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner or Flow Improver. At 15 to 20 PSI, lay down the dark patches or bands first and then add the second camouflage colour. Spray soft edges freehand and get hard edges with masking tape or stencils. Do small touch-ups with a brush.
