Background & context

Im Winter 1940/41 hatte die RAF kaum etwas gegen nächtliche Bomber in der Hand - und plötzlich zahlte sich der Turm aus. Ein Defiant-Schütze konnte einen Bomber von unten und schräg hinten unter Feuer nehmen, ohne dass der Pilot ihn direkt anfliegen musste, und das Flugzeug lag dabei ruhig genug, dass die vier Brownings trafen. Über den Blitz-Winter gehörten die Defiant-Staffeln zu den erfolgreichsten Nachtjägern der RAF. Mattschwarze Tarnung, später Bordradar an der Nase - aus dem gescheiterten Tagjäger wurde für anderthalb Jahre ein Nachtjäger, bis Beaufighter und Mosquito übernahmen.

On the tabletop

As a night fighter, the Defiant found its role in the winter of 1940/41 against German bombers over London. The 1:48 kit depicts the black NF.I with 113 parts and a 250 mm wingspan. You build either the No. 151 Squadron aircraft from Wittering or the one flown by Squadron Leader Philip Saunders. In a diorama it suits an airfield at night, with ground crew readying the fighter for its next sortie.
