    Background & context

    Die No. 617 Squadron wurde im März 1943 für einen einzigen Auftrag aufgestellt: die Talsperren an Möhne, Eder und Sorpe zu brechen. Barnes Wallis entwickelte dafür die Upkeep, eine vier Tonnen schwere Walzenbombe, die rückwärts rotierend über das Wasser sprang, die Torpedonetze überwand und an der Staumauer absank. Abwurfhöhe 18 Meter, gemessen mit zwei gekreuzten Scheinwerfern unter dem Rumpf. In der Nacht zum 17. Mai 1943 starteten 19 Lancaster unter Wing Commander Guy Gibson, acht kamen nicht zurück, 53 Mann fielen. Möhne und Eder brachen, Gibson erhielt das Victoria Cross.

    On the tabletop

    For Operation Chastise in May 1943 the Lancasters were modified without bomb bay doors so that the Upkeep bouncing bomb would fit beneath the fuselage. This kit shows exactly that special version in 1:72 with 267 parts. You choose between the aircraft of Wing Commander Guy Gibson and that of Squadron Leader Les Munro, both of No. 617 Squadron. As a display model it recalls the attack on the Möhne and Eder dams.
