Background & context

Ashigaru waren ursprünglich angeworbene Bauern, die man für einen Feldzug zusammenzog und danach wieder nach Hause schickte. Im Lauf des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden daraus stehende Verbände mit einheitlicher Bewaffnung: lange Yari-Reihen, geschlossene Bogenabteilungen und schließlich Teppo-Schützen, deren Arkebusen ab 1543 über portugiesische Händler ins Land kamen. Bei Nagashino 1575 entschied diese Fußtruppe die Schlacht, und zwar gegen berittene Samurai.

On the tabletop

Up to 328 ashigaru in 10 mm turn one box into the bulk of a Japanese army of the 16th and early 17th centuries. With yari you form long spear lines, with yumi archer units and with teppo the musketeers who changed the battlefield from the middle of the century, while naginata add close-combat troops. Strips of one, two, three and five men let whole blocks come together quickly. Twelve casualty figures serve as markers or on bases.
