The Type 63 / YW531C from Rubicon Models is a 1/56 scale plastic kit of a Chinese amphibious armoured personnel carrier. The kit can be built as a standard Type 63 or YW531C export version and includes open or closed hatches, bow wave deflector, Type 54 12.7mm machine gun, and driver and gunner figures.

Background & context

The Type 63 was developed in China as an amphibious armored personnel carrier for the People's Liberation Army. It was designed to transport troops, provide fire support, and overcome water obstacles such as rivers or lakes. The YW531C export variant retained the basic design but could be adapted for customers with different armament or equipment. The vehicle family was used by China and various export users and is associated with Cold War conflicts such as Vietnam, the Sino-Vietnamese War, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War.

On the tabletop

The Type 63 is a Chinese armoured personnel carrier that crosses rivers under its own power, raising a trim vane at the front to do so. In Cold War games it carries your Chinese or North Vietnamese infantry forward and covers them with its Type 54 12.7 mm machine gun. As the YW531C export version it also suits other armies of those decades. You set the hatches and trim vane during assembly, and a driver and gunner are included.
