    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    During the Napoleonic Wars, the French line infantry formed the backbone of the Grande Armée - disciplined formations deployed from Iberia to Eastern Europe. The Peninsular Campaign presented particular challenges to the French troops: guerrilla warfare, difficult terrain, and a coalition of British, Portuguese, and Spanish forces demanded constant adaptability. The light cavalry of the Chasseurs à Cheval undertook reconnaissance and pursuit tasks and was considered the most mobile branch of the French army. Field artillery, such as the proven 6-pounder, supplemented the combat power of the units through direct fire support.
